Maine Summer Company is a project that has been dear to my heart
for many years.
MSC started as a vision, and a dream.
I love Maine and have wanted to
live here since I was 5 years old.
It all started with reading the
book, “Blueberries for Sal”
I knew someday I would live in Maine.
When I was a young adult
I started “Summering in Maine”, by my
late thirty’s I knew
I had to move to Maine.
It was a perfect summer day, late in August of 1999.
It was 75
degrees, and a slight breeze was blowing. I was standing on the top
of a cliff, overlooking the Penobscot Bay. It was a day filled with
all that personified a “Maine Summer”. Big blue-sky, white puffy
clouds skittering past, the water dotted with Sailboats, and
sparkling like diamonds from the bright clear sunlight.
The gulls were reeling and screeching above my head. The grassy ledge
smelled freshly mown. It was a magic moment, and I knew, then and
there, I was going to move to Maine, the place my heart calls home.
As I stood on the precipice, with the sun gently warming my
shoulders, I had a vision. I would create a company that served
people from away. I had the idea that folks from all over the country
could use Maine Summer Company as a resource. Whether they were planning a
trip, wanted to buy a Cottage, Land or build a House, MSC could work
with them.
To serve this market I envisioned a website that was a
love letter to Maine, with information and tips about the different
travel regions. We would feature Southern, Midcoast, Downeast, the
Lakes, and the Forests regions. The website would be rich in photos,
a great place to take a virtual vacation and dream of a life that
could be. The website would also inspire people to buy a home in
Maine, for summer fun, retirement or to realize their vision of
finally moving to Maine. Maine Summer Company would have a Real
Estate Division, Property Management, and Home & Garden Design with a
resource hub of pre-qualified professionals. I also visioned creating
a lifestyle look that we could then share in the national market.
The
other, and most important piece was MSC would work hard so all of our
clients would feel as if they were at the “Four Seasons Hotel”
Concierge desk. I wanted MSC to be the new benchmark for how people
were treated and the caliber of services offered and received.
A website was born in October of 1999, the company was incorporated
in 2001 and the word Maine Summer was trademarked in 2002. This all
took place while I was still living on my farm in Malibu, California.
I was a woman obsessed and possessed, I could think of nothing but
living in Maine and The Maine Summer Company.
I sold my business in LA and moved to Maine in August of 2001. Since
moving to Maine I have been working diligently in Marketing, and
Design. I have learned a lot about living in Maine. I love the small
towns, terrific light for photographing, and all of the water, Lakes,
Ponds Streams, Estuaries, Rocky Coast and protected shoreline. The highs
and lows of the tides are amazing and quite magical. In the Bay of
Fundy the water goes out so far it looks as if someone sucked up the
sea. WOW. I also get a kick out of exploring and doing photo
documentaries of the state industries. Lobstering was fun, I went out
on the boat, and learned that Lobstering is a lot of hard work and
the folks who do it are committed and passionate about their
profession.
I was also very fortunate to be introduced to a family
who has been tending their blueberries up in Washington County for 4
generations. I was out in the early morning light, following the
harvesters, and their blueberry rakes. I met the fellow who makes
those specialized harvesting rakes, he is the last manufacturer of
these rakes in Maine. I learned that the Blueberry industry is very
seasonal, and short lived. The bulk of the work gets done in 6 long
grueling weeks. In September everyone gets back to their “real” jobs.
Maine is a place filled with hard working folks. I have a few other
industries I will be documenting. Wooden Boat Building, Potato
Growing, The Apple Business, Forestry, and one that is dear to me,
Tug Boats, I love to watch those little boats pulling the large cargo
ships into the Portland Harbor.
