Southwest Harbor Loop.
Route 1 to Route 3 to Route 102. Take Route 102A
past Southwest Harbor to Bass Harbor, and then
back on 102 to close the loop just south of Somesville.
This is a drive filled with great places to stop
and explore. You are still in Acadia National
Park, where a beautiful inlet can be found at
Fernald Point. Seal cove on the west side is also
interesting. On this drive, you will pass through
marsh, forest, cliffs and sandy beaches.
Park Loop Road
Route 1 to Route 3, through Bar Harbor to Park
Loop Road. The landscape changes from rolling
meadows to woods with glimpses of the sea. This
road was created to take you one-way through Acadia
Nat'l. Park. The road rises and falls in elevation
along its course, sometimes reaching into the
domain of the osprey. Go early in the day -- Acadia
is a very popular destination and, at the height
of the summer season, can be more crowded than
you
bargained for.

Machias Port
Take route 92 (Elm Dr.) From Machias at the corner
of the U. of Me. Campus, and continue south to
Machias Port. Past Capt'n Cates B&B, stop
at the old theatre and listen for echoes of long-gone
laughter and applause. Further down the road,
park near the church and cemetery and take in
the view of sparkling Machias Bay.
Fort O'Brien
The site of the first naval battle of the Revolutionary
War, is just down the road a piece. Continue south
to Bucks Harbor, perfect location for a quiet
morning walk.
Blueberry Barrens
The road from Machias to Lubec Route 1 to Whiting,
route 189 to Lubec. One may choose to perceive
the road between Machias and Lubec as devoid of
interest. What a sorry mistake that would be!
True, the trappings of summer tourism are few
and far between, as are the excited cries of vacationers,
but isn't this the Maine you came looking for;
peaceful shores, quiet woods, and wild Maine blueberries???
Stretching intermittently on either side of the
road, blueberry barrens turn fiery red long after
their fruit has been harvested, adding a vibrant
aria to the grand finale of Maine's autumn color
symphony. |

The Other Acadia
Route 1 to Route 186 to Winter harbor. Turn onto
Park Loop Road -- one way. A beautiful drive through
the quiet side of Acadia Nat'l. Park. As you ramble
along, stop frequently to marvel at the heavy
hand of nature ~ majestic spruce, tide pools.

 |
Take the short walk up to Schoodic Head, the views
are breathtaking. The surf is a real dazzler...
be careful, it can be dangerous. Photographers
take heed: at the end of the day the light is
outstanding!

Rambling, walking or strolling, it is
the best way to feel at one with wherever you are.
Take time to smell the trees, flowers and fresh air.
Feel the spongy pine forest, dirt path
or city sidewalk underfoot. Always take your camera;
with no car to park,
the world is your oyster! Play skip, laugh and have
fun..
You will feel energized and filled with
new thoughts and ideas. |

South Lubec Road, Lubec
The wonderful point of this walk is that it is
the furthest east you can get in our country,
without getting wet! A great trail adjacent to
this funny striped lighthouse is a two-mile walk,
with views for days. Easy level walk, often you
will see whales & of course the ever present
gulls reeling & squealing. A great place for
a picnic lunch. |
|
Route 1, between Dennysville and Whiting.
This 888-acre park has a great 2-mile trail, an
easy walk with interesting flora & fauna,
as well as some beautiful views to occupy your
eyes! Also a very sweet half-mile shore loop trail,
great for a stroll and maybe even a picnic ~ this
park is truly rich in birds, who summer here. |

Route 1 to Route 15.
This is a charming village walk ~ if you looked
up quaint, arty & musical in the dictionary,
a photograph of Blue Hill should appear, a poster-child
for beauty. One could spend a few days here enjoying
the views, salty air & walking in the neighbourhoods.
We adore the peaceful grace this small town has
at its very core. Bring your camera & smiling
face. |

 |
Route 1 to Route 15 to lands end. This short
walk can be quite amazing, stretching not only
your legs but feeling as though you were walking
into the past. An old fishing village where you
can park car at one end, walk to other end, meander
back ~ check out the very architectural fishing
weirs, engineered to let the tides do the work
~ fascinating. Stop in a few of the shops &
let the quiet slow energy of this working fisherman's
village wash over you. |
|
Route 1 to Route 187 to lands end. This small
island is a walker's & birder's paradise.
It has a huge stand of pines, and also coastal
peatlands ~ smooth rocks reach into the sea, just
right to ramble around on. Or kick back &
enjoy the sun on your shoulders, while being plulled
into a dream-like state where real becomes surreal
~ like Alice in the rabbit hole. The walk is easy,
breezy & very interesting. Bring hat, sweater
& a picnic. |
